During June, the production of the fishing sector grew 56.77% compared to the same month last year, thus accumulating three consecutive months of growth – although this time slowed down, considering the rates of 144.07% and 363.5% seen in April and May, respectively – according to the Economic Activity Progress Report of the INEI.
And, at the end of the first half of the year, they state that there was an increase of 45.02%. The result seen in June is explained by the greater extraction of species for indirect human consumption, namely anchovy for fishmeal and fish oil (+74.85%): From 41,535 tons registered in June 2023, the figure reached 241,565 tons. The ports of Chimbote, Malabrigo, Coishco, Callao and Tambo de Mora were the main landing points.
Likewise, the catch of species for direct human consumption increased by 17.02%, that destined for the canning industry, 51.3%; preparation for freezing, 23.1%; and for fresh consumption, 10.1%; while fishing of continental origin decreased by 21.02% due to the lower extraction of species for fresh consumption, preparation for freezing and curing.
Why are mining and domestic cement consumption falling?
Mining and hydrocarbons fell by 7.47% due to lower dynamism in metal mining (-8.08%) following lower production of zinc (-20.9%), iron (-14.7%), copper (-12.0%), gold (-2.5%) and lead (-0.3%).
Although the prices of molybdenum (24.6%), silver (6.1%) and tin (5.8%) did rise.
While hydrocarbons contracted by 3.51% due to a drop in natural gas production (-10.2%) and natural gas liquids (-1.2%), oil production rose by 1.5%.
And, domestic consumption of cement —a barometer of construction— decreased by 5.48% in the sixth month of the year due to the lower dynamism of private and self-construction projects.
