In mid-August, the increase in the minimum wage will be discussed

Daniel Maurate, head of the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (MTPE) reported this Wednesday, July 31, that a call has been made for the second week of August National Labor Council (CNT) in order to study the increase of the Minimum Vital Remuneration (RMV), currently set at S/1,025.

It is worth noting that this space is made up of the MTPE, trade union organizations and business associations. “Thinking about an increase in 2023 was not possible, because the economy was in recession; but now the situation is different and production is recovering. We can now think about increasing the RMV,” Maurate noted for Tv Perú.

The official insisted on the strengthening of the economy after the results of April and May, so he does not rule out the possibility of having the same “level of expansion” in June.

“The economy is recovering, investments are coming in and this is a message to the international community. This recovery must also be felt by workers” he dismissed.

It is worth remembering that the CNT has a proposal, validated by the International Labour Organization, which establishes an annual periodicity for the revision of the RMV, always respecting the economic context and inflation. If applied, the RMV would now be S/1,168.

It should be noted that The Peruvian RMV is the third lowest in Latin America, reaching an average of US$4,243. We only surpass Argentina (US$145) and the Dominican Republic (US$243).

Fronts such as the CGTP demand that the basic payment be raised progressively – within a period of five years at the most – to S/2,400 in order to cover essential products and services for citizens. In recent days, the heads of the Economy and Finance portfolios, as well as the Labor and Employment Promotion portfolio, have not ruled out this increase.

FACT

The CNT has not been free of tensions. Recently, employers walked out in rejection of the end of outsourcing of essential activities. The minimum wage is expected to rise this year, according to the government.
