The project of the new Jorge Chavez Airport The new terminal in Lima has reached 90% progress, according to Lima Airport Partners (LAP). This new terminal promises to revolutionize the country’s air connectivity, with an infrastructure three times larger than the current one and a capacity to serve 40 million passengers annually.

Its operations are scheduled to begin on December 18 of this year. In addition, it will feature significant investment and cutting-edge technologies. The new Jorge Chávez will offer a superior travel experience, comparable to the main airports in the world. Below we detail the highlights of this important work.

What new technology will be implemented at the new Jorge Chávez airport?

The new Jorge Chávez airport will integrate cutting-edge technologies to improve passenger experience and operational efficiency. Among the most notable innovations is the Baggage Handling and Inspection System (BHS), which includes computerized tomographs for the inspection of carry-on and checked baggage. This system will allow passengers to pass through security checkpoints without having to remove liquids or electronic devices from their bags, thanks to its 360° vision capacity.

In addition, four CT scanners will be installed for the inspection of checked baggage. These machines will be able to inspect up to 2,700 bags per hour initially, increasing to 3,440 bags per hour by 2025.

Jorge Chávez Airport: progress of the new facilities

  • Digital Apron Management Centre to guide aircraft to their parking spaces: this advanced system will be controlled remotely using screens and cameras installed on the apron. In addition, the Operations Control Centre, IT Control Centre, Maintenance Control Centre, Security Control Centre and a Crisis Room for airport management are being implemented.
  • Implementation of the heavy baggage handling system: Advanced cargo lifts are being installed to facilitate the handling of heavy baggage. 22 mechanical systems for baggage on departing flights have already been installed and 12 additional ones are being installed for baggage on arriving flights.
  • Equipment in the check-in and TUUA area: 90 check-in modules and 42 self-check-in kiosks are being installed. Flight information screens and equipment for TUUA (Single Airport Use Fee) registration are also being installed.
  • The new Jorge Chávez will have 59 boarding gates: 46 with boarding gates and 13 with bus access, facilitating the boarding and disembarking of passengers.
  • Progress in finishing the new terminal and handing over tenants: progress is being made in the construction of a wide pedestrian boulevard that will connect the new terminal with the city, new finishes in the toilets and seats in the public areas of the new terminal. 37 elevators, 33 escalators and 10 moving walkways for passengers have been installed.

What are the new accesses to the new Jorge Chávez airport?

Access to the new Jorge Chavez Airport The works will be carried out initially through two temporary bridges located between the Santa Rosa axis and Faucett Avenue. These bridges, each with two access roads in both directions, will be operational until the final bridges are completed in 2027. To guarantee the safety and fluidity of traffic, there will be the presence of agents from the National Police.

Who is in charge of building the airport?

The Jorge Chávez International Airport Expansion Project is a completely private initiative undertaken entirely by Lima Airport Partners (LAP). With the support of Fraport, a German company with vast experience in airport management, and IFC, a World Bank entity specialized in financing development projects, this project seeks to modernize and expand the airport infrastructure to serve the growing flow of passengers.
