Progress. Eco-friendly vehicles are increasingly in demand in Peru, but at the regional level we are still at the back of the queue.
At the end of the first half of 2024, 3,217 electrified vehicles – including hybrids and electric vehicles – were sold in the country, while in the same period last year, 2,004 units were sold: there is a growth of more than 60%, according to Alberto Morisaki, manager of Economic Studies at the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP).
“The performance of this segment of the automotive market is due to the fact that more and more companies in the sector are marketing electrified vehicles; between January and June of this year We have had nearly 60 brands and more than 140 models available to Peruvians“, he explained.
Another important factor is the greater importance that citizens give to caring for the environment and the savings generated by the use of these cars.
Likewise, when breaking down the information by type of technology, it can be seen that in the first half of this year, The most sold eco-friendly vehicles were light hybrids with 1,597 unitswhich meant an annual increase of 38.3%; followed by conventional hybrids with 1,294 units and a growth of 102.2%; pure electric vehicles with 181 units; that is, an increase of 64.5% and plug-in hybrids with 145 units, higher by 46.5% compared to the first half of 2023.
However, despite the growth of this segment of the automotive market, Penetration levels in the country are still very low when compared to our peers in the regionsuch as Colombia, where 23 out of every 100 new light and heavy vehicles sold are electrified. Meanwhile, in Ecuador the figure is 13%, in Mexico 7% and in Peru 4%.
At a regional level, Peru maintains the lowest penetration level.
