SIS provides up to S/1,000 if your family member dies: what are the requirements and how to access them?

In order to help mitigate the financial burden that comes with the loss of a family member, the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS) offers a financial burial benefit to cover the costs of the funeral service. These include the coffin, the funeral chapel, the shroud, the right of cremation, the niche, and the transfer of the deceased.

Throughout the year, the SIS has published four executive resolutions for the granting of this economic benefit that ranges between S/350 and S/1,000, which are registered in the official newspaper El Peruano. These legal instruments have accredited more than 32,000 people, reaching an amount that exceeds S/31 million.

SIS burial subsidy: who can access it?

Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS) offers a financial benefit intended to cover the funeral expenses of deceased insured persons. This subsidy has a maximum amount of S/1,000which is given to the insured’s immediate family members to help cover funeral costs and which may vary depending on the expenses incurred. Below, check who can access it:

  • People who have been designated as beneficiaries to receive this subsidy during their affiliation with the SIS.
  • Relatives up to the fourth degree of consanguinity or third degree of affinity, in the absence of an officially registered person. In this case, it is necessary to sign annex 3 HERE.
  • The person who paid for the funeral expenses with prior justification.
  • The mother or father of the deceased or stillborn newborn.

What are the requirements to access the SIS benefit?

In order for Comprehensive Health Insurance to reimburse you for funeral expenses, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete and sign the application for payment of the burial subsidy, which must be signed by the deceased’s accredited person.
  • Original receipt for funeral services, already paid in the name of the beneficiary.
  • Certified copy of Death Certificate issued by Reniec.
  • Affidavit detailing burial expenses.
  • In case of cremation, attach the corresponding authorization.
  • If you were not previously designated as a beneficiary, submit Annex 3, with the declaration of a relative up to the fourth degree of consanguinity or third degree of affinity HERE.
  • If the expenses were made in a rural area: Affidavit of Expenses for services rendered.

SIS burial financial benefit: how to access it?

The SIS burial benefit aims to cover expenses related to the coffin, the funeral chapel, the shroud, the transfer to the cemetery or crematorium, and the niche or the right of cremation. The amounts are S/350 for death or stillbirth of more than 28 weeks of gestation and newborns up to 28 days old; S/700 for deceased minors between 29 days old and less than 12 years old; and S/1,000 for deceased insured persons from 12 years old or older. Below, check how to access this economic benefit:

  • Go to the health center where the insured person died within 60 days of the day of death. You can also go to the facility closest to the insured person’s place of residence or the place where the insured person became a member.
  • Provide the necessary documentation so that the health center can verify it. If there are any observations, these will be recorded in the charge document that will be sent to the accredited person. To do so, you will have a maximum of two business days to make the necessary corrections, and if this period expires, the file will be returned.

  • Go to the Banco de la Nación and request the refund. Don’t forget to bring your ID so you can withdraw the money at any branch and collect it within nine months from the date of issue.
