A block of 41 former ministers of State from various portfolios, such as Environment and Production, presented a letter in which they expressed their concern and opposition to the “pretension of the National Fisheries Society (SNP) to weaken environmental institutions, by wanting to legalize industrial fishing in protected natural areas, directly affecting the Paracas National Reserve.”

The group of former State Ministers urged the Judiciary to safeguard and protect natural heritage and marine biodiversity, “declaring the SNP’s claim unfounded.”

“Which, with wrong and biased arguments, seeks to eliminate the prohibition that has been in force in our legal framework for more than 20 years, and whose objective is to protect marine ecosystems, in light of the principles of prevention and precautionary measures,” the group said.

The former ministers expressed their rejection of what they considered “a clear strategy to weaken our National System of Protected Natural Areas,” which would violate the integrity of the Paracas National Reserve.

Along these lines, the minutes maintain that the commitments and obligations assumed by the Peruvian State to achieve the effective conservation of 30% of marine ecosystems until 2030 have been “completely ignored.”

“We demand that the Judicial Branch safeguard the interests of all Peruvians and that the Executive Branch fulfill its role of guaranteeing the protection of our natural heritage,” concludes the document, signed by the former officials cited below.
