The price per kilo of chicken in retail markets has shown a slight contraction in recent days, and registers an average of S/9.23, according to data from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).
In the last month, the price of gutted chicken to the consumer—that is, the neighborhood markets and businesses—moved between S/9.69 and S/9.42 per kilogram.; while in distribution centers—such as the Great Wholesale Market of Lima and other similar ones that supply retailers—it reached S/5.50 per kilo.
Compared to the average value a year ago, when it was S/10.68, there is a drop of S/1.45 in the price that households pay for this basic product in the food basket.
Midagri specifies that an average chicken weighs 2.55 kilograms, and therefore, in the wholesale section, a whole one costs S/13.75 and for retail purchases, S/24.02.
It is worth adding that in the first quarter of this year, a kilo of chicken exceeded S/12.20 – specifically in the last week of February until the fortnight of March, and since then it has fluctuated between S/10 and S/11.
Why did the chicken rise? According to Julio Velarde, president of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), high temperatures and avian flu punished production costs and therefore translated into a high price for families.
On the other hand, the average price of eggs from laying hens amounts to S/9.40 per kilogram; the breeding hen at S/7.08 and the pink egg, at S/8.15.
