Peru’s air traffic controllers go on strike for 72 hours at Christmas

The Peruvian air traffic controllers abide by a national 72-hour strike. The strike was called from Thursday 23 at 7:00 pm to Sunday 26 at 7:00 pm, according to the Chilean airline Latam, who asked their passengers to be attentive to the status of their flights as they could vary.

This strike, called by the Unified Union of Air Traffic Controllers of Peru (Sucta), It has been followed without serious damage to air traffic, except for a few canceled domestic flights between the cities of Lima and Cusco.

The rest of national and international flights are operating normally for now, except for a delay suffered in a flight between the city of Trujillo and Lima.

Sucta reported that it is “completely unacceptable” that the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation (Corpac) has not complied with the agreements reached last Christmas when they raised a similar strike in which they demanded better comforts and conditions to avoid COVID-19 infections.

“Situations that put the health of workers at risk continue to arise and the company is not able to act immediately to avoid non-compliance with social distancing,” Sucta said in a statement.

Reasons for the conflict

Last year, main demands of the controllers They were adequate and ventilated environments, as well as individual spaces for the necessary rest during night shifts at airports that operate 24 hours a day.

Corpac, for its part, acknowledged the needs of the union and he assured that, although they try to meet the demands, “the current situation that the company is going through due to the attacks of COVID-19 has not made it possible to achieve the desired economic balance.” In addition, he indicated that the company activated a contingency plan not to suspend national and international flights.

“Last year we had a loss of S / 75 million, and this year, it is S / 60 million,” Corpac general manager Juan Flores told Andina news agency.

Corpac reported that it is found open to dialogue to find “harmonious solutions under criteria of austerity, rationality and balance” for all workers nationwide. However, the union accused the company of delaying negotiations.

In addition, Flores affirmed that the takeoff and landing operations of all commercial aircraft are guaranteed at all airports, including Lima.
