The president of the Central Reserve Bank (BCRP), Julio Velarde, estimated that the 2024 Consumer Price Index (CPI) will close around 2.2%, after recovering its path towards the target range in April.
During his presentation at the XV SYMPOSIUM – International Mining Meeting, organized by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy (SNMPE), the head of the BCR stated that the price curve will continue to decline for the remainder of the year.
“Over the next few months we expect inflation to be close to 2%, although it may increase a little later. Sometimes it should even be below 1.9%,” said the banker.
Velarde also indicated that inflation at the end of 2024 is expected to range between 2% and 2.2%, a situation that would remain until 2025 as long as there are no major external shocks.
On the other hand, the head of the BCRP considered “ridiculous” the projections that monetary poverty in Peru will return to its low levels after 26 years.
“There are ridiculous projections from some serious economists, who say that it will take 26 years to return to the poverty level. It doesn’t make sense, they are thinking that poverty is uniform, that people earn S/0, S/1, S/2. It is foolish”, story.
