The Minister of Housing, Construction and Sanitation (MVCS), Hania Pérez de Cuéllar, said that there is no intention to privatize or concession any of the companies that provide sanitation services, such as the Lima Drinking Water and Sewer Service (Sedapal).

Before the Congress of the Republic, the minister indicated that her office, through Legislative Decree 1620, seeks to strengthen our sanitation providers.

In this sense, he specified that the Peruvian Government “has made the firm decision to solve the core problem of the EPS” in order to convert them into efficient public companies.

“To close the gap we need to have modern, efficient, corruption-free and sustainable public companies, with financial backing and planning and management instruments. “We refuse to continue taking the bitter pill of indifference, accepting social justice,” he stressed.

Furthermore, Pérez de Cuéllar pointed out that the only alternative that is being proposed is for the EPS “to remain public, but efficient and without corruption.”

“Concessions are a mechanism for the participation of the private sector to contribute to closing gaps, given that with public resources alone it is impossible to meet all the needs of the population, especially those most in need. With them nothing is privatized,” he said.
