The Minister of Economy and Finance, José Arista, recognized that the 3% growth rate projected for 2024 will not be enough to improve the monetary poverty figures, which this year, in Peru, reached 29% of the population.
During the Budget and General Account Commission of the Republic, the head of the MEF said that it needs to grow at a rate of 5% or 6% to generate well-being in the population.
“For every point that the GDP rises, poverty is reduced by 0.7%. That is why our stubborn commitment to providing well-being to the population and the country through growth, and 2% or 3% is not urgent, we need to grow at rates 5% or 6%, and that is the great challenge for all Peruvians,” said Arista.
In this sense, the minister stressed that the conditions for development of the extractive industry in the interior of the country exist, especially with copper prices that once again reach historical peaks.
“We can achieve it. Of the total concessioned territory in Peru, only 10% are in exploitation and if you look at the mineral ranking in which the country appears in the Top 10, there are four or five products, among them, copper “, Arista reported.
In addition, he gave the example of Apurímac, where he assured that there are enough mineral resources to invest over the next hundred years.
“Apurímac is the richest department in the country, square meter by square meter, we have reserves for a hundred years. Arequipa and Cusco, the same. We have a great future with mining, agriculture, technology, ports, with Special Economic Zones (SEZ) on the coast “They are employment magnets,” he highlighted.
