Sunat: almost 900,000 new taxpayers have joined since the pandemic began

The National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat) reported that the number of registered taxpayers in Peru increased by almost 900 thousand during 2020 and 2021, years that were marked by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the country’s economy.

Of this amount, 85%, that is, more than 750,000, corresponds to registered as natural persons (independent worker or natural person with a business) who joined the productive activity, through formal employment, the provision of services or the start of an enterprise.

The remaining 15% (more than 130,000) were legal persons (companies) that were mainly incorporated into the MYPE Tax Regime (RMT), General Income Tax Regime and Special Income Regime (RER), specified the National Superintendent, Luis Enrique Vera Castillo.

Despite the difficult economic context caused by the pandemic, of the total of natural and legal persons who registered in the Single Taxpayer Registry (RUC) to develop economic activities, 43% did so in Lima; while the remaining 57% did so in the interior of the country.

“One of the reasons for the increase in taxpayers registered in the RUC by almost 900,000, among individuals and companies, is the ease of doing so, because the process is completely online and can be done not only from a computer , but also from the smartphone, through the People APP “, indicated Vera Castillo.

Sunat: regions with the most taxpayers

After Lima, the regions with the highest number of new taxpayers are La Libertad (5.7%), Arequipa (5.2%), Piura (5.1%), Puno (3.7%) and Junín (3,6), specified the superintendency.

Vera Castillo pointed out that although at the beginning of the pandemic, restrictions on the mobility of people to prevent the spread of the disease momentarily limited the registration of new taxpayers, thanks to the digital transformation of the entity, the service could be quickly activated via the Internet. .

In the case of companies, since May 2020, registration in the RUC for legal entities is also completely virtual and is done through the Digital Intermediation System (SID-SUNARP) of Public Registries.
