SPH: SMEs in regions pay up to 130% more than in Lima and Callao for access to natural gas

To give us an idea, a household in Arequipa and Cajamarca pays 79% more than a family in Lima and Callao; An industry pays 125% more and an SME 130% more. “The greatest factor of centralism that we have in Peru currently is the cost of energy,” indicated the SPH.

Access to natural gas is a desire that the regions have had for 20 years. However, after this time, households, SMEs and industries located in the interior of the country have to pay up to 130% more than users in Lima and Callao for energy that we produce 100%.

This was stated by Felipe Cantuarias, president of the Peruvian Hydrocarbons Society (SPH), who explained that the higher cost in regions is due to the fact that it is more expensive to transport natural gas from Pisco, since pipeline infrastructure does not exist.

“After 20 years, since Camisea operations began, the massification of natural gas continues to be an illusion for the regions. To give us an idea, a household in Arequipa and Cajamarca pays 79% more than a family in Lima and Callao; An industry pays 125% more and an SME 130% more. The greatest factor of centralism that we have in Peru currently is the cost of energy,” he stated.

Cantuarias said that there is a consensus on this issue. The MEF, the MINEM, Osinergmin and all the experts have expressed their opinion in favor of the single rate. However, “it is surprising that the Congressional Energy and Mines Commission opposes this mechanism without any technical argument to support it.”

If the level rate for all users is approved, a natural gas concessionaire that sells to a large industry in the regions will be obliged by its development plan, approved by Osinergmin, to build domestic natural gas connections.

“If the proposal sent by the Executive is not approved, only centralism will win, where the regions are once again excluded from accessing economical and eco-friendly energy that we produce 100%,” concluded the union leader.
