One of the sectors that has recovered its prepandemic levels the fastest is that of the construction. A reflection of this was the announcement that a growth of 35% is expected at the end of this year compared to that registered in 2020. Also, if we compare the performance it would have in 2021, this would exceed by two figures that reported in 2019, according to the Peruvian Chamber of Construction (Capeco).
Guido Valdivia, Capeco’s executive director, pointed out that, if the projections are fulfilled, there will be a growth of 16.2% compared to the 2019 construction GDP.
The good performance of the sector would occur despite the fact that, in October, November and perhaps in December, the GDP of construction would show a decline in its indicators.
“Construction is expected to grow by around 35% in 2021, which implies overcoming the prepandemic stage also despite the fact that it fell in October —as anticipated—, it will fall in November and most likely also in December. Despite those falls, we agree with the logic that there will be a growth of 35%”Valdivia explained during the teleconference of the Economic Report on Construction.
On the other hand, the union projected that, at the end of the year, only 62.4% of the investment budget for 2021 would be executed. Local governments would be the ones that would spend the least amount of money.
