Tren Macho will be ready in 2029: 3 consortia will compete to modernize the Andean railway

Proinversión reported that three bidders prequalified to support their technical and economic proposals for the award of the Huancayo-Huancavelica Railway (FHH), popularly known as the Tren Macho.

Those interested in assuming the financing, construction, acquisition of rolling stock, operation and maintenance of the railway project are the Consorcio Ferrocarril HH (Sociedad Anónima de Obras y Servicios, COPASA Sucursal del Perú and Ferrocarril Wanka SAC), Consorcio Concesionaria Ferroviaria del Centro (Construcción y Administracion SA and Hidalgo e Hidalgo SA) and the company Mota-Engil Perú SA.

When will the Tren Macho be awarded?

Proinversión plans to announce the winner in the second quarter of this year and they set the concession at 30 years—five to design and build it, and 25 for its operation and maintenance. It is worth noting that the Tren Macho requires an investment of close to US$394 million. 128.7 kilometers of the Huancayo-Huancavelica route will be modernized.

Its construction aims to provide safe, efficient and reliable transportation for the benefit of 1.2 million Peruvians, mainly from Junín and Huancavelica.

“It will become the engine of socioeconomic development because it will boost the tourism and agricultural potential in both regions and will facilitate the population’s access to health, education, labor and commercial centers,” according to Proinversión.

What will be the characteristics of the new Tren Macho?

The Macho Train project also includes the reconditioning of its 7 stations and 20 stops, and will have 7 daily circulations: 6 in one direction exclusively for passengers and one circulation in each direction, mixed transport of passengers and goods.

Finally, new rails will be installed on the main track, the existing wooden sleepers will be replaced with concrete ones, updates will be made to the drainage system (longitudinal and transversal) along the entire line, renovation of the 15 railway bridges , remodeling of patios and construction of the new repair and maintenance workshop, among other interventions.
