Las Bambas: Government will wait until tomorrow for Chumbivilcas’s response

The dialogue table scheduled between the Government, representatives of MMG Las Bambas and the citizens of the area of ​​influence of the mining project, including those of Chumbivilcas, did not reach any concrete agreement, beyond a period of less than 24 hours. to announce the unblocking of the road.

The meeting, which was virtually chaired by the president of the Council of Ministers, Mirtha Vásquez, made it clear that this Wednesday, December 22, at noon, the communities will have to assume a reliable position a few days after the paralysis of Las Bambas operations. . Although he made it clear that his intention is not to declare a state of emergency, he did not rule out that the decision could be pushed by the rest of the cabinet.

“We have a responsibility to you, but also to the rest of the country. If I do not have an answer, the president and the ministers will have to analyze other measures, “said the head of the PCM.

But it was not the only announcement. The technical approach presented by the government seeks to declare the entire mining corridor as a “special treatment zone”, which would allow a project to mitigate environmental impacts and generate development opportunities.

From the PCM, they also explained that with this declaration, mechanisms would be sought so that the mining activity contributes to closing gaps in health and education. The government’s commitment is to have a greater presence in the area, and that is why Vásquez will arrive in the conflict zone on Thursday 30.

For his part, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Eduardo González, ruled out that the creation of a new corridor to transport minerals from Las Bambas, in Cotabambas, to the ports of Arequipa, is on the Executive’s agenda.
