The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) informed the Congressional Oversight Commission that it has resolved the departure of the president of the board of the National Port Authority (APN), Walter Tapia, after the controversy over the exclusivity of essential services of the Cosco Shipping company in the port of Chancay.
During his presentation before this working group, Minister Raúl Pérez-Reyes indicated that in the coming days the resolution should be published with the name of the new director of the Peruvian organization
“It was suggested that Mr. Tapia does not meet one of the requirements, which has caused us to ask him to resign from the position. He has already presented it and we are in the process of electing the new president of the APN,” said the head of the TCM.
In parallel, a confrontation was taking place between the outgoing director of the APN and the representatives of the Cosco Shipping company before the Transport Commission.
During the meeting, the company reiterated that the legal security of the country is affected and that several commitments of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Peru and China are unknown.
“A rigorous process was followed to obtain permits. One of the conditions requested by the shareholder was the exclusive use of essential services. This allowed the investment to begin, because if it was not granted, another type of decision was made regarding the amount, technology, or not investing at all,” stressed Carlos Tejada, general manager of Cosco.
