The activity of the sector Mining and Hydrocarbons has experienced a notable increase during the month of February, according to the recent report from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) on the current progress of economic activity.
The production of the Mining and Hydrocarbons sector increased by 15.94% in February of this year, as a result of the expansion of metallic mining activity by 17.10% and hydrocarbons by 8.85%, according to data from the INEI. In measuring the sector, metal mining participates with 84.6% and the rest corresponds to hydrocarbons.
Metallic mining expansion rose by 17.10%, supported by the largest production volume of copper (13.6%), molybdenum (59.0%) and gold (29.0%). While the hydrocarbon subsector contributed to the positive result with an increase of 8.85%, having a greater exploitation volume in crude oil (28.7%) and natural gas liquids (5.1%).
The opposite was seen in the fishing sector, where the production index had a drop of 31.26%. This decrease in supply affected product inflation due to the high demand during Easter. This year, only 318 tons of species destined for indirect human consumption such as anchovy for fishmeal and fish oil were extracted, compared to the 43,864 tons corresponding to February 2023, which meant a reduction of 99.27%.
