China’s Jinzhao takes over the Marcona port terminal

The Chinese-owned company Jinzhao Perú SA will be in charge of the construction of the New Port Terminal of San Juan de Marcona, in Ica, after, after the declaration of interest, the 90-day period for another bidder to present itself has expired. before ProInversión.

The new terminal is closely related to the Pampa del Pongo iron project, also from Jinzhao, located in the province of Caravelli, in Arequipa. The mining company hopes to remove the mineral through its own port.

That is why Marcona was born as a private and self-financed initiative, presented by Jinzhao. The terminal will be executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in which the concessionaire will be responsible for the design, financing, construction, conservation and operation.

According to ProInversión, the work “would reactivate investments for US$15,000 million in the south of the country that will impact economic growth, job creation, improvement of income and quality of life of the population in the area of influence.”

As there are no more interested parties, ProInversión will proceed with the direct award in favor of the proponent. The term of the Marcona concession will be 30 years, counting from the signing of the concession contract, and includes a reference investment of US$405 million.

In October 2023, Jinzhao updated the planned investment in Pampa del Pongo downwards, which went from US$2,344 million to US$1,799 million. The deposit is expected to come online in 2027 and produce 22.5 million MT of iron per year.

It should be noted that the port of Marcona will specialize in providing boarding and unloading services, especially loading of iron ore concentrates and other metals and mining supplies, which is why it is expected to also capture the exportable supply of Las Bambas.
