World Economic Forum postpones January meeting due to omicron variant

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the World Economic Forum will postpone until June 2022 its Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, scheduled for January, due to the uncertainty about the outbreak of the omicron variant and “considering the evolution of the pandemic.”

Through its social networks, the Foreign Ministry of Peru reported that the arrival of President Pedro Castillo was expected at the next January meeting, as well as the holders of the Economy and Finance and Foreign Trade and Tourism portfolios, among others.

“At the international meeting, the participation of President Pedro Castillo and Foreign Minister Oscar Maúrtua, as well as the head of the MEF, Pedro Francke, and Mincetur, Roberto Sánchez, and a delegation of Peruvian businessmen,” he specified in a brief release.

For its part, the organization of the event said, through a statement, that the current conditions of the pandemic make it “extremely difficult” to offer a global meeting in person.

“The preparations have been guided by expert advice and have benefited from the close collaboration of the Swiss government at all levels. Despite the strict health protocols of the meeting, Omicron’s transmissibility and its impact on travel and mobility have made it necessary to postpone it, ”he submitted.

It will be the second consecutive year that a face-to-face event has not been held. Davos was canceled in 2021 and remained virtually due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
