In 2021, during Pedro Castillo’s administration, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) sought, via tax reform, to collect taxes on series, movies and music applications. The initiative was not supported by Congress and remained up in the air. Now, Sunat will go for the same cause in order to expand the tax base.

Gerardo López, new head of the tax collection entity, assured that they have their eyes “on the large flows that do not pay taxes.” —among which are streaming platforms such as Max, Disney+, Star+, Netflix and Spotify—.

“The ‘Netflix rate’ is applied in several countries in the region. We do have a favorable opinion about a rate of that nature. We have conveyed our position to the sector and they will ensure that it comes to fruition,” he told the press.

López stressed that they have transferred this idea to the MEF so that actions can be taken, since it is key that there be a relevant rate within fair taxation.
