Congress, by a large majority, supported an initiative that increases paternity leave from 10 to 15 consecutive calendar days, which will apply to workers in the public and private sectors.

According to bills No. 1330 and others, in cases of premature births and multiple births, the leave may be increased from 20 to 25 days.

Among the approved changes, The ruling establishes that the 5 additional days must be subsidized by EsSalud and no longer by the employer — who is responsible for paying his worker the current 10 days of leave — with the aim of reducing costs for companies.

“This proposal protects family members, promotes the development of the family nucleus based on values and protects the rights of working parents,” argued Pasión Dávila Atanacio (BMCN), president of the Labor and Social Security Commission of the Congress.

Finally, it is also provided that pregnant or nursing mothers may ask their employer not to carry out work that puts their health or normal development of the embryo at risk, as well as request a change to teleworking.
