On the eve of Christmas, the sale of fabrics increases in Ecuador; silk and satin, among the most demanded

Seamstresses and ventures are also reactivated. They buy fabrics to make dresses and cushions.

Of two, three or more than five meters of fabric are the common purchases that citizens make, either to make their garment for Christmas, end of the year or simply to fix their house.

For example, on December 17th, Zoila bought three meters of fabric with pictures of Christmas reindeer. She plans to take it to a seamstress to put as a furniture cover. And Adriana was looking for dark red silk fabric. With this, she wants to make a dress to “welcome the year well.”

The sale of cloth intensifies on Christmas Eve. The premises, mostly in the center of Guayaquil, fill up from noon.

Stefanie Warehouse, located in Chimborazo and Clemente Ballén, is one of the busiest. All kinds of fabrics are offered: crepe, tulle, twine, brocade, lycra, chiffon, among others.

Kathiuska Baidal, Stefanie’s administrator, indicates that demand is increasing these days. And that also has improved compared to 2020.

“In the pandemic we had a great blow. Yes there were difficult months; we open certain days and dispatch (the cloth) about three people. Sometimes we sent for transport and they would pick up at the premises, and that is how we were able to support ourselves. But this 2021 has improved ”, he comments.

He adds that the biggest movement, also in the other place, located in the Mall del Sol, arises from patterns, be it flowers or balls, even flights and Christmas fabrics.

“Like Christmas docoma fabric, cotton, velcro for crafts and tree stands, it is well distributed,” he points out.

Baidal indicates that in August and September there was a first rebound, because since that date garment manufacturers have acquired fabrics. And now the second was registered, due what people want to make their clothes or for business.

“There are people who want to start their own business, not only clothing, but crafts, which carry fabrics,” he mentions.

Burda Warehouses it is also in high demand. They have two stores: one on Aguirre and Chimborazo streets, in the center of Guayaquil, and another in the Policentro shopping center, where its administrator, Mirella Meza, mentions that December is a busy month.

He says that what has changed with 2020 is that now they are looking for more silk fabrics; before it was to make pajamas.

“These dates always generate expectations. Last year they reinvented themselves and, in order to reunite, even as a family, the demand was in fabrics for sleepovers. This year, as it has opened a little more, it has turned to garments for dresses ”, he says and adds that the colors gold, red, white and green are the most requested.

Burda registers 20% more income compared to 2020. They have crepe, silk, linen, brocade and other fabrics. In children the plaid fabric in white with red is quite in demand.

The fabric sales business also reactivates female entrepreneurs. For example, Piedad Mora is a seamstress and for the first days of December they look for her to make clothes. So far she has made two dresses: one for an adult and one for a girl.

Today anyone can sell or buy used clothing and earn an income, the options multiply

“Last year they did not look for me, I imagine that because it was not possible to get out much due to the pandemic; but now I see that people have been excited, and that income is important, “he says.

It states that it will have spare fabric, zippers and buttons, because it has already happened that on December 24 and 31 they come for arrangements.

The fabrics and accessories business also has other niches. Grisley Avilés is dedicated to the manufacture of home and baby cushions from her business called Chulys Cute, in Duran. And in recent months orders have increased.

“Yes, I have had sales despite the situation we have been through. December is the month in which I work the most ”, he says.

Avilés makes cushions, chair covers, attachment dolls with the Christmas decorations in the workshop he has organized at home. The completion of your work does not take more than a week. And she acquires the fabrics in the center of Guayaquil. (I)
