Every summer, annually, the Central Reserve Bank of Peru offers a sector of the population the opportunity to be part of a program that could mean a significant change in their lives, through one of the most prestigious courses in the country. and, if they obtain good results, they could access very convenient job positions in the public sector.
To do this, we spoke with Jorge Loyolageneral coordinator of the Central Bank’s Summer Courses, who provided greater scope regarding this program, such as deadlines, benefits, among other details.
BCR extension course: what does it consist of?
—The oldest is the Advanced Economics extension course, which was created in 1961. The first group that received this course was around 10 students, currently we have 35 students each year. The reason why this course was created is that the Central Bank required to have well-trained professionals who could perform various functions within the technical areas of the entity. Under this approach, the Central Bank took the path of training the personnel who were going to work in the various areas of the bank, but at the same time the participation of a good number of students also allowed those who did not enter work were quickly demanded by the other entities of the public sector, and also even by private sector entities. As time progressed, the needs of the Central Bank increased and, in 2008, the advanced course in Finance was created, which is in its 16th version. This economics course allows us to train people specialized in very specific topics. specific, which are related to central banking, therefore, annually we are training around 70 people, of which between 15 and 20 people have joined. Therefore, we have about 50 people who are distributed in the different entities of economic activity, both in the public sector and the private sector.
What are the requirements to access the BCR course and what are the entry modalities?
—It should be noted that students can participate in the extension course from the eighth cycle of studies up to two years after completing their high school studies, therefore, we try to concentrate the development of the course in a few months that are not limited to coincide with the classes of the universities themselves, because this could limit the access of some group of students who are interested. We can divide the way to attract students who enter the extension course into two aspects: first, there is a complementary course that we regularly do in the month of August, basically aimed at provincial universities and which lasts a month, we do it. We call it a refresher course and the idea is to be able to have an experience with students from the province to level up the various economics topics a little. Then, be able to invite a group of students to participate in the extension course that takes place in the summer, both for Economics and for the area of Finance. The second form of entry is the selection process of the summer course, which generally starts from November and currently has several stages, there is an exam that is taken at the beginning. Then, students have to develop an essay on a topic that the committee in charge of the course defines each year. Subsequently, they have to make a video and, then, the sum of all the evaluations determines the list of students who enter the course. So we have two modalities. On the one hand, a group of invited students enters, the best according to the ranking of grades they have from the refresher course. To this group are also added the students who enter through the general selection process, this gives us a group of around 70 students who participate in both courses, which change according to the dynamics demanded by the areas of the program. bank or the new knowledge that comes out every year. We try to invite the best professors in each of the topics and some group of professors are from national universities, another group of professors are guests from universities abroad. We have a tradition of inviting in any case the best teachers in each of the topics or courses taught.
How long does the BCR course last?
—The summer course lasts three months, while the refresher course lasts a month. During the three months of the summer course, students take around a dozen subjects, each lasting around a week or two weeks, depending on the topic, so that it does not coincide with the students’ classes at their own universities. . At the end of the course there is a ranking and the best students are invited to work at the Central Bank, but after that the staff continues to be trained in different aspects. One of them is scholarships or financing for studies abroad. These students who entered through the extension course have the possibility of studying abroad, both in Finance and Economics, and the fact of having studied in the extension course is an important card to obtain acceptances at universities in the outside. The fact that we can count on foreign professors is also important because they already know the students and often give them letters of recommendation, which is usually one of the requirements required to study master’s or doctoral degrees abroad.
