EsSalud, formally known as the Social Health Insurance of Peru, is a public entity in charge of providing medical care coverage and economic benefits to its members, who include active workers, pensioners and their dependent family members. This organization works with the purpose of ensuring the well-being and health of the insured population, offering a wide range of services that range from prevention and health promotion to the treatment of diseases and rehabilitation.
The institution is financed primarily through contributions from employers and workers, as well as other revenues. EsSalud operates a network of health facilities that includes hospitals, medical centers and health posts distributed throughout the national territory. In addition to medical services, the Social Health Insurance provides economic subsidies in cases of temporary disability, maternity, breastfeeding and funeral. Learn more about these financial supports below.
Breastfeeding allowance
The breastfeeding subsidy is a financial support of S/820.00 soles that EsSalud provides the mother of a newborn baby from a primary insured. This benefit is intended to help in the care of the child. In situations of multiple births, a subsidy is provided for each baby born alive.
To access this benefit, the insured is required to have contributed for 3 consecutive months or 4 non-consecutive months in the 6 months prior to the start of the birth. In addition, the employment relationship must be maintained at the time the baby is born.
The newborn must be registered as the beneficiary of the main insured. If the baby’s mother is not the primary insured, she must be enrolled in EsSalud.
Maternity allowance
The maternity benefit is a monetary amount intended for insured women in work, with the purpose of compensating for the loss of income due to childbirth and the care required by the newborn.
To be eligible for this subsidy, the regular insured must have contributed for 3 consecutive months or 4 non-consecutive months in the 6 months prior to the start of enjoying the subsidy. It is necessary to maintain the employment relationship at the beginning and during the subsidy period and to have been employed in the month of conception.
Those insured under the special regime and independent artisanal fishermen and fish processors must have paid the contribution for the month of conception before applying for the subsidy.
If the employer has recorded part or all of the days corresponding to the maternity benefit as days worked, EsSalud will partially pay the subsidy for the days correctly declared and will issue a resolution that partially recognizes the days to be subsidized, specifying the days not recognized because they have been declared as worked, leaving open the possibility of presenting administrative appeals.
Funeral benefit
It is an amount of money provided by EsSalud to anyone who demonstrates having covered the expenses of the funeral service for the death of a regular insured, whether active or pensioner, up to a limit of S/2,070. The right to this benefit falls on the closest relative of the deceased, following a specific order: spouse or cohabitant, children, parents, brother or sister of legal age or a third party.
To access this benefit, the deceased regular insured must have made 3 consecutive months of contributions or 4 non-consecutive months in the 6 months prior to his death. In the case of workers, they must have maintained their employment relationship at the time of death.
For pensioners, they must have retained their pensioner status at the time of death. It is important to mention that this benefit does not apply to deceased members of the Complementary Risk Work Insurance (SCTR).
Temporary disability allowance
This subsidy is provided to regularly active insured persons, agricultural workers and special regimes, with the aim of compensating for the loss of income due to the inability to work caused by health problems.
To qualify for the delivery of this money, the regular insured must have made 3 consecutive or 4 non-consecutive months of contributions in the 6 months prior to the start of the disability. Fishing workers under Law No. 28320 must have 2 consecutive or non-consecutive contributions in the 6 months prior to the start of the disability.
In addition, the worker must maintain his or her employment relationship at the beginning and during the subsidy period. In the event of an accident, you only need to be affiliated. If the employer has registered part or all of the days corresponding to the temporary disability subsidy as days worked, EsSalud will make a partial payment of the subsidy for the days correctly declared and will issue a Resolution that partially recognizes the days to be subsidized, specifying the days not recognized for having been declared as worked, allowing the presentation of administrative appeals.
