The tax benefits available to companies that invest in scientific research, development and technological innovation could come to an end due to a critical decrease in applications in recent years, revealed Concytec.
This tax benefit program, known as (R+D+i) and aimed especially at mypes, has existed since 2015 thanks to Law 30309 and will only be in force until 2025.
“In recent years we have been experiencing a drop in applications, if companies do not use these benefits the rule may no longer be renewed,” said Concytec for La República.
Since its launch in 2016 and until December 2023, more than 390 projects have been applied for, but only 155, presented by 100 companies, have been approved. Of the latter, 26 were mypes and 74 were medium and large companies, with a joint investment of S/260 million.
The bulk is located in Lima, with 105 projects. The other 50 projects are spread throughout the province, where La Libertad (19), Arequipa (9) and Ica (6) stand out.
However, the 38 projects presented between January and December 2023, the year of the recession, are still below the 48 that were presented before the pandemic, and even below the 53 presented in 2022.
How does (R+D+i) work? Depending on the company’s net income, they can access a deductible expense tax benefit of 60%, 90% or 140% in addition to 100% of the amount invested in a project. The maximum annual deductible amount per taxpayer is 500 UIT (S/2 million 575,000) and the company can present all the projects it wants in the same year until it reaches the limit.
