During 2023, The Peruvian economy contracted 0.55%according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

They influenced the negative result the fall in production in manufacturing (-6.65%), construction (-7.86%), financial (-7.85%), telecommunications (-5.80%), agriculture (-2.91%) and fishing (-19.75%).

Not counting the COVID-19 pandemic, which pushed GDP in 2020 to -11.12%, in 2023 the worst result for the economy in 25 years was obtained, considering that in 1998, a decrease of 0.4% was recorded. , according to the BCRP.

Furthermore, during the month of December, GDP fell again after the rebound in November and fell 0.74%.

The abrupt decline in fishing in 2023

The most pronounced negative variation in 2023 is found in fishing, due to the lower extraction of species of maritime origin (-21.78%), with lower capture for indirect human consumption – that is, anchovy and fishmeal -: 1 were extracted million 993,295 tons, 50.67% less than in 2022.

The reason for the poor performance in fishing? The unfavorable climatological factors, stated the INEI.

Continental fishing fell 6.31% due to the lower catch of species in its three destinations: fresh consumption (-4.39%), frozen (-11.34%) and curing preparation (-24. 25%).
