The United States is the main destination market for Peruvian flowers

Flower exports in Peru have increased steadily in recent years and register more than US$9 million a year. The United States is the main destination market for fresh flower exportsfollowed by the Netherlands and Canada, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

In the country there are more than 60 species of flowers in production. Gladiolus, carnation, gypsophila, roses, astromelias, hydrangeas and chrysanthemums are the most economically important flowers both in number of producers and in planted area throughout the national territory.

Likewise, there are more than 10 regions involved in the production of flowers, among which the regions of the mountains and central jungle stand out, such as Junín, Huánuco, Áncash, Cajamarca, Arequipa, as well as Cusco, Ica and the Lima region.

In recent years, Junín has been considered the most important region in this area, especially in the provinces of Tarma and Chanchamayo, which have been positioning themselves in flower production at the national level.

Floriculture in Peru, generates up to 25,000 jobs in the field alonemainly family-based and with high female participation, becoming a sector capable of empowering, providing work and enhancing the economy of family farming in rural areas.

It is worth remembering that in March 2021, Midagri approved the ‘Flower chain development plan to 2030’, in order to promote productivity, innovation and global competitiveness, as well as the expansion of the flower chain, integrating to all linked actors such as producers, regions and private companies with the aim of promoting and increasing floriculture production.

They present the largest bouquet of flowers in the country

For Valentine’s Day and in order to encourage the purchase of flowers from small producers in Peru, Midagri holds the exhibition-sale ‘Say it with flowers’, in which the largest bouquet in the country is presented, with more than 1,500 units, in addition to varieties of flowers from various regions.

The fair, which takes place on February 13 and 14 in the municipal park of the traditional district of Barranco, offers more than 60 floral species and plants, including roses, tulips, sunflowers, astromelias, orchids and more, at affordable prices.

In addition, there is a demonstration module with the main flower dyeing techniques, revealing an interactive experience for the public interested in the floral production process.

“This campaign is very important because it brings small producers from the producing areas closer to the city. We are here today in the main park of Barranco, where there are more small producers, women in much of the production who offer varieties of flowers at an affordable price,” said Alberto Sáenz, general director of the Agricultural and Agroecology Directorate of Midagri.
