Sunat seized diamonds valued at more than S/15.5 million

In an operation that lasted more than 12 hours, the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat) intervened in 9 jewelry stores, located in the Miraflores district, and seized 700 diamonds that entered the country irregularly and whose commercial value is estimated at more than S/15.5 million.

The operation was carried out in blocks 3 and 4 of Av. La Paz, in Miraflores, an area where costume jewelry and fine jewelry are usually sold. The objective of the controls carried out was to identify jewelry and diamonds that did not have the proper customs documentation, the entity stated.

The interventions were carried out by a group of Customs officers, personnel from the Public Ministry and the Tax Police, as well as experts specialized in identifying these jewels.

The operation was carried out with prior information, obtained from cross-referencing information on jewelry imports and risk profiles, which had been collected on the marketing of the intervened businesses.

The batch of jewelry remained in the custody of Sunat, so that a gemologist can analyze each piece to determine its originality and approximate market value.

What document do jewelry need to have?

Jewelry must have a import declarationIf you do not have this documentation, as in the case of these 9 jewelry stores, an alleged crime of receipt arises, framed in the law on customs crimes, which determines the application of a sanction of imprisonment of between 8 and 12 years as it has an aggravating nature.

Sunat indicated that it will continue with actions to prevent and repress customs illegalities and other delegated powers throughout the country, which is why it will continue to deploy its customs teams to continue carrying out controls through land, air, sea and river routes.
