Alex Contreras was at the head of the Ministry of Economy and Finance for a year and two months. He was one of the few who lasted in office since the Dina Boluarte Government began. However, his management was criticized in recent months due to his refusal to recognize the recession that the country was facing and the lack of efficiency of the recovery programs, which increased the loss of confidence and credibility on the part of the economics agents.
Upon leaving the Government Palace, the former head of the MEF spoke about the management balance and the challenges that José Arista will face to recover the path of growth after one of the worst economic years in more than two decades. “The year 2023 was particularly challenging, but it was worth the effort, the economy was able to get out of the recession,” he posted on his Twitter account.
Alex Contreras leaves the MEF: “We leave an economy in recovery and expansion”
In statements to the media, the former Minister of Economy and Finance, Alex Contreras, pointed out that his management left the Peruvian economy in a process of recovery and expansion. “There were doubts and concerns about the impact of the plans. The momentum we generated through Con Punch Peru 1, 2, Con Punch Emergency and the strengthening of the capacities of subnational governments bring us auspicious numbers in January and February. In 2023, we accumulate savings and now we leave the economy in a clear process of recovery and expansion.”
For Contreras, it is essential that the MEF continues a medium and long-term agenda, which involves promoting infrastructure with a regional focus, strengthening the naval industry, the development agenda of the Amazon and the consolidation of our country as the hub port.
“When you are a minister, leaving can happen at any time, but the situation in which I am leaving the portfolio is positive. Now, it is essential to maintain the key issues in the country. I will meet this week with Minister Arista to talk to him about the challenges of the sector and my first message to him will be to sustain the growth process, as well as not lose the medium and long-term agenda.“said the outgoing head of the MEF.
Finally, he stated that it is fundamental and necessary to reorient the country’s agenda towards a political reform that allows generating an environment of greater stability and balance of powers.
“I appreciate the trust of the president and the premier during this period in charge of the MEF, my best wishes to continue advancing in building a better and much fairer country,” he stated in his X account.

José Arista Arbildo was born on August 18, 1959 in Huambo, Amazonas.
