Until the first quarter of this year, refineries, supply plants and importers had to use and market diesel, gasoline and gasoholes with a sulfur content of no more than 10 ppm, within the framework of the implementation of the Euro 6, in order to have less polluting fuels in our country. However, the Government of Dina Boluarte extended the deadline, as La República announced a few weeks ago.

Through DS 003-2024-EM, signed by the president and the heads of Minam, Minem and MTC, they determined that From October 2025, the use of fuels with a sulfur content of no more than 10 ppm will be mandatory, with exceptions:

  • B5 diesel nationwide, except in the departments of Loreto and Ucayali.
  • Regular gasoline and gasoholes nationwide, except in Loreto and Ucayali.
  • Premium gasoline and gasoholes nationwide.

The regulations specify that the extension of the term is due to the Peruvian socioeconomic and environmental crisis, as well as war conflicts and global inflation, factors that undermine the national macroeconomic balance.

Furthermore, the evolution and development of refinery infrastructure and logistics gaps create potentially adverse scenarios in the context of energy security, which would violate equitable access, sustainable and resilient provision of essential services.
