The Las Bambas mining company will suspend 100% of its production from 7:00 am today, Saturday, December 18, reported last night Alvaro Ossio, general manager of MMG, after holding a meeting with the president Pedro Castillo.
“We are already 29 days of blockade. This has made it impossible for us to transport our personnel and supplies ”, he declared.
The company representative said that for each day of the stoppage, approximately S / 5 million are lost in taxes.
Ossio emphasized that with the cessation of the mine’s activities “more than 8,000 workers and 75,000 families will be affected, in addition to the generation of employment and taxes for the country.”
Dialogue on hold
On the other hand, The Bambas, in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Mirtha Vásquez, announced that it will not participate in the next spaces for dialogue with the communities involved in the mining conflict.
In the document signed by Carlos Castro Silvestre, Manager of Corporate Affairs of Las Bambas, the company communicated its inability to participate in tables and spaces for dialogue until viable and verifiable agreements are concluded within the area of influence of its operations.
In this way, the company argued that it seeks to ensure the integrity of its workers, their work and the smooth and uninterrupted transportation of the mineral.
The document presented on Thursday, December 16, was mentioned yesterday by the Vice Minister of Mines, Jorge Luis Chávez, during his participation in a forum on the challenges and perspectives of mining in Peru.
“Yesterday (Thursday), Las Bambas presented a document addressed to the presidency of the Council of Ministers indicating that they are not going to participate in the dialogue,” said Chávez.
“We believe in dialogue. If one of the parties does not talk in the dialogue, how can we have a good relationship? “ emphasized.
For her part, the Prime Minister, Mirtha Vasquez, confirmed that conversations with the company have receded. However, he pointed out that as a State they continue to meet with the community.
