The Peruvian Government published the Multisector Plan for the Prevention and Reduction of Maternal and Child Anemia in Peru for the period 2024-2030.
The supreme decree 002-2024-SA comes after learning that, according to the Demographic and Family Health Survey – ENDES, the prevalence of anemia in children from 6 to 35 months increased by 1.2 percentage points, reaching 43. 6%, in the first half of 2023.
This unfortunate record came after a slight reduction of 1.2 percentage points, from 40% in 2020 to 38.8% in 2021; However, it increased by 3.6 percentage points by 2022, reaching 42.4%.
“In our country, anemia is considered by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a severe public health problem,” the document states.
The Multisector Plan for the Prevention and Reduction of Maternal and Child Anemia in Peru for the period 2024-2030 aims to contribute to the reduction of the increase in anemia in children from 6 to 36 months and pregnant women, “which affects cognitive development , social, emotional and quality of life of people, and has an impact (in the long term) on the social and economic development of the country and low productivity”.
This supreme decree is endorsed by President Dina Boluarte, the Minister of Health, the Minister of Education, the Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, the Minister of Production, the Minister of Development and Social Inclusion and the Minister of Housing, Construction and Sanitation.
