Despite warnings from UNESCO, Mincetur announces in Davos an increase in capacity at Machu Picchu

During his participation in the Davos World Economic Forum (Switzerland), the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Juan Carlos Mathews, insisted that in 2024 the capacity at Machu Picchu will increase despite the observations of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO), reported EFE.

The official acknowledged that UNESCO set a limit of 4,044 simultaneous daily visitors and claimed that this opens the possibility of scheduling shifts in the wonder of the world.

Another option would be to use dynamic capacity “which is not about bringing 5,000 or 6,000 tourists suddenly”, but is guided by seasonality because in some months there is usually greater demand than in others.

Mathews highlighted the benefits of betting on the sale of virtual tickets for the Inca citadel because “if you go from a distant destination to visit Peru, you will not be able to see if you get access to Machu Picchu in line.”

Mathews: political instability has not scared investors

Asked by EFE about the constant political instability of recent years, Minister Mathews emphasized that investors have not been scared because they told him that they are looking for long-term macroeconomic stability and legal security.

“When they look at that, they don’t look at six months, one or two years, they look at a much longer horizon. The advantage we have in that scenario is that what we show is an evolution of Peru in the last almost 30 years, where we appear with macroeconomic indicators quite well positioned,” he noted.
