Sales of shopping centers in 2023 exceeded those of the previous year, according to ACCEP

The president of the Association of Shopping and Entertainment Centers of Peru (ACCEP), Carlos Neuhauspointed out that sales in this sector are increased by 2% with respect to 2022.

In its balance sheet, Neuhaus noted that 2023 was positive despite the first quarter of the year, in which road closures were recorded, in addition to the passage of Cyclone Yaku. He also specified which regions have the potential to invest in a shopping center in 2024.

How did shopping centers do in 2023?

Carlos Neuhaus indicated that, despite various factors that have occurred in 2023, it has been a positive year because the majority of shopping centers were able to be reactivated thanks to the publication of Law No. 31914, which modifies the Operating License Framework Law . “This helped control this situation. “The shopping centers began to operate relatively normally, which allowed them to compensate for the negative results that were being obtained up to that point,” he explained.

Neuhaus added that the increase in sales is 2% higher than the S/36,000 million that were registered in 2022.

Regarding this, he explained that one of the factors that influenced the year was the climate. “Last year we practically did not have a cold winter, as is normally experienced in Lima, so sales of seasonal clothing stagnated,” said Neuhaus.

In addition, he was optimistic about 2024 and asked the different municipalities to understand how shopping centers work. “This type of business activates the economy of the area, promotes formalization and, even, the surrounding businesses modernize, as a result of the added value that the shopping center has in the environment,” added Carlos Neuhaus.

San Juan de Lurigancho may have 3 more shopping centers

On the other hand, he said that the investment in the new San Juan de Lurigancho shopping center was US$85 million and allowed the creation of around 10,000 direct and indirect jobs. Furthermore, he explained that, due to the population density, it is one of the districts that has the greatest prospects for the development of new malls; Therefore, this jurisdiction would have the capacity to have up to 3 more of these spaces.

“It is a thriving district and there are studies that could be carried out in the short and medium term. That district has the capacity to have up to four shopping centers,” she said.

Finally, Neuhaus stated, regarding the possibility of new shopping centers in cities outside the capital, that both Chiclayo and Trujillo are presented as important alternatives.

“The mall inaugurated in Iquitos (Loreto), which required an investment of US$65 million, has been a success. Another important market is Ayacucho, a very interesting development opportunity for the sector. There are even companies that have already shown interest in this market. Let us remember that the location of the shopping center is very important for its development, because the execution of a project depends on it,” Neuhaus concluded to the newspaper El Peruano.
