Peru stands out for being a mining country, since several of the regions of Peruvian territory are home to companies that extract the different minerals that exist in the territory. Among the main departments where this activity is practiced are Arequipa, Moquegua, Cajamarca, La Libertad and Áncash. The latter, for example, has the district, of the entire nation, that receives the most money from mining royalties, according to information from the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).

San Marcos is the district in Peru that receives the most money from mining canons. This jurisdiction received in 2023 the sum of S/256 million only for this concept, according to information from the MEF transparency portal, in 2023

Thus, it surpasses localities in other mining regions, such as Cerro Colorado (Arequipa) or San Antonio (Moquegua), which, in the last year, collected S/60 million and S/72 million for mining canons, respectively, according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

For this reason, San Marcos is recognized as the ‘richest district in Peru’. In 2023, and according to the municipality of said town, S/246 million have been executed in more than 500 projects in favor of the town.

Part of said budget has been directed to the implementation of the water and sanitation system, the construction of the San Marcos Health Center, the Yachakuy project, among others.

Where is the San Marcos district located?

San Marcos is one of the 16 jurisdictions that make up the province of Huari, in the Ánchash region. This town was created in 1955 through Law 12301. Likewise, this place has a total area of ​​556.75 square kilometers and is above 2,954 m asl.
