Number portability continues to drive competition in the mobile telephone market in Peru, proof of this is that, in 2023, a total of 5 million 648,853 mobile lines changed operating companies, exceeding by 1.52% the figures achieved in 2022 (5 million 564,067 lines ported), reported the Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications (OSIPTEL).
In the annual analysis, it is observed that the months that recorded the highest number of mobile ports were August (518,280), July (494,948), September (488,671) and December (481,069).
Portability was driven by postpaid lines
In 2023, the growth of mobile portability was mainly driven by operator changes in the postpaid segment, which represented 70.68% of the total ports in the year, according to the information published in the PUNKU computer tool.
The number of ports in this segment reached 3 million 992,518 lines, the highest since this right came into force, which meant a growth of 8.46% compared to the figures recorded in 2022 (3 million 681,234 lines ported).
It should be noted that last December the second historical peak in the number of postpaid ports was reached, after 360,722 lines changed operators, a figure only surpassed by the ports made in August 2023 (372,708 lines).
Regarding the prepaid segment, in 2023, 1 million 656,335 ported lines were reported, equivalent to 29.32% of the annual total, a figure below what was recorded in 2022, when 1 million 882,833 lines changed operators.
Claro and Entel obtained the best net results
In 2023, Claro and Entel were the operating companies that obtained the highest net results—that is, the difference between lines gained and lost—positive with 207,949 and 164,512 mobile lines in favor, respectively.
On the other hand, the largest negative balances corresponded to Bitel and Movistar with 183,782 and 183,891 net lines lost, respectively. For their part, the rest of the mobile operating companies obtained, together, a negative net balance of 4,788 lines.
Fixed line portability grew 171%
Regarding the number of fixed telephone lines that changed operating companies, a growth of 171.25% was evident compared to 2022, going from 27,071 fixed lines ported the previous year to 73,430 ported in 2023.
By operating companies, Optical Networks had the highest positive net balance in 2023 with 27,210 fixed lines ported. On the other side, Movistar was located, which had a total negative balance of 18,436 fixed lines.
