On September 20, 2001 he was appointed to the position by the Congress of the Republic during the government of Alejandro Toledo. He remained as such until 2005. The industrial engineer and economist also held the presidency of the defunct National Council of the Judiciary (CNM).

The UNI mourns his departure
The rector of the National University of Engineering (UNI), Alfonso López Chau, expressed his pain and mentioned that the university community is shocked by the death of García Núñez. As a sign of mourning, they have placed the flag at half-mast. There he was a professor at the Faculty of Economic Engineering, Statistics and Social Sciences.
“He was dean, student leader, dean of the Engineers college, Habich Torch Award, which is the highest distinction that UNI grants to very few teachers. And most importantly, he was a friend in the last stage sharing ideals for the good of the country,” he said. Lopez Chauwho recalled that he took over from Gonzalo García in the direction of the BCR.
The rector of the UNI added that the political youth considered him as a teacher due to his quality in exposing ideas with unbeatable logic. In the last year he sought to unite progressive thought and encouraged young people to form the political group Ahora Nación.
For his part, Nelson Machuca, general secretary of said political group in metropolitan Lima, said that its militants were distressed and emphasized their great work for the country.
“We are quite grateful for what Gonzalo García means for the UNI, for the country and the project Now Nation. It is the unity factor that the youth needed. His legacy is not only in the UNI but in the Central Reserve Bank, the CNM and in the union and union positions that he held at the national level,” Machuca estimated.
Gonzalo García is buried in the Medalla Milagrosa church, in San Isidro. Tomorrow he will be taken, at 9:30 am, to the Jardines de la Paz cemetery.
