A solid regulatory framework, proactive government policies, investment in research, education and public awareness, adequate infrastructure, sustainable financing and international cooperation are some of the measures and recommendations for the development of clean energy from renewable natural sources for environmental sustainability and economic growth, published in the National Foresight Observatory of the National Center for Strategic Planning (Ceplan).
This transition to clean energy from natural sources (sunlight, wind, water and the earth’s heat) offers many benefits, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving the quality of the air we breathe, job creation, sustainable rural development and strengthening energy security. In addition, it promotes research and technological innovation, fundamental for future progress.
The growth of solar and wind energy is notable, going from generating less than 2% of global electricity in 2010 to 12% in 2022, with projections of reaching almost 70% of global electricity by 2050, in a favorable scenario of net emissions to zero, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Internationally, countries such as Germany, Denmark, Costa Rica and Iceland have demonstrated leadership in the development of renewable energy, transforming their nations and moving towards energy self-sufficiency.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, the main source of electricity comes from plants hydroelectricrepresenting approximately 50% of total energy generation in the region during the period 2000-2022, according to the database of Ember, an independent think tank specialized in energy.
In the specific context of Peru, hydroelectric energy prevails as the most used renewable energy source; However, a significant increase is observed in the participation of wind and solar energy in the country’s electrical matrix, going from 0.2% in 2012 to 4.7% in 2022. This advance marks an important milestone towards a generation of more sustainable and environmentally friendly electricity in the country.
In this regard, the technical sheet “Development of clean energy from natural sources”from the Ceplan Observatory, highlights the need to continue promoting the transition towards clean and renewable energies, recognizing the transformative potential that this represents for the country in terms of environmental sustainability, economic growth and energy security.
