They will no longer evict artisanal fishermen from Los Yuyos, Barranco

The Municipality of Barranco – headed by Jessica Vargas, a supporter of Renovación Popular – had given an ultimatum to the artisanal fishermen of Los Yuyos beach to evict it, alleging that they occupy an intangible area.

A few hours after the measure was executed, the Ministry of Production (Produces) and the district municipality agreed to create a dialogue table instead of stopping fishing activity.

This space for dialogue will begin next week, reported from Produce, and will also be made up of the San Pedro de la Costa Verde Fishermen’s Association.

“Right now, artisanal fishermen are alert to the El Niño Phenomenon. They They need our support because they are the breadwinners of their families.”, commented the Minister of Production, Ana María Choquehuanca.

From Oceana Peru they welcomed the will of the authorities, since stripping fishing families of their daily activities was not appropriate in this context of economic recession.

Questions to the municipality

It should be added that since July 12 of this year, artisanal fishermen began the procedures to obtain permits from the municipality to store their boats, but Vargas’ management only achieved silence.

“Artisanal fishermen deserve respect and attention, just as the municipality “It has clubs, restaurants and other economic activities,” said Congresswoman Flor Pablo.

The seamen point out that they do not do business on the beach, rather they take their catches to the nearest dock to market them. On average, They usually catch around 40 kilos of resources like the mullet in one day, which has an approximate price of S/5.00 per kilo.

“We live off the sea, the boat rests only on the sand, but from there the rest of the hours it is in the water. Right now that the summer season begins we were hoping to capture more fish because before the anomalous waves have prevented us from going out much,” fishing leader Jonathan Yataco told La República.

Parliamentarian Sigrid Bazán maintains that the barges that fishermen seek to park do not exceed ten, and urged Mayor Vargas to provide a solution because “they are not large fleets that are going to affect the beach.”

“My impression is that the mayor (Vargas) would prefer that they go to the Chorrillos dock, but I don’t know if it is concessioned or there is some limitation only for groups in Chorrillos. “I don’t see that they prioritize artisanal fishing, but I don’t want to be unfair either and there is an open door for negotiations,” she commented to this medium.
