Artisanal fishermen from Los Yuyos beach would be left without work due to eviction

The artisanal fishermen of Los Yuyos beach denounce that the Municipality of Barranco has given them a period of 48 hours to vacate the space where their boats and canoes are located, which will have a direct impact on their income. Jonathan Yataco, president of the San Pedro Artisanal Fishermen’s Association of the Costa Verde, explains that they do not do business on the beach itself, but rather they take everything to the nearest dock.

“What we want is for them to let us work. We work and live day to day from fishing, also for our family’s consumption. We live off the sea, the boat rests only on the sand, but from there the rest of the hours it is in the water. Right now that the summer season begins we were hoping to catch more fish because before the abnormal waves have prevented us from going out much,” Yataco told The Republic.

The leader and artisanal fisherman said that sometimes they can catch around 40 kilos of resources such as mullet in a day, which has a price of approximately S/5.00. With this, they can bring sustenance to their home. Furthermore, they have been carrying out this activity in this area for more than three decades without any problem.

The eviction letter that the fishermen received indicates that it is done in compliance with a recent regulation that has declared the area as intangible. “Through the third and fourth articles of Council Agreement No. 130-2023-MDB, it was established that the beaches are for public use, inalienable and intangible, so the development of activities on an outpatient basis was prohibited, as well as recreational and sports activities not organized by the MDB,” it is stated.

“In the middle of the recession they don’t let them work”

For its part, the international organization Oceana Perú He regretted that in the midst of the recession and the development of the El Niño phenomenon, they are not allowing the fishermen to work normally. For this reason, they invoked “the good faith” of the Municipality of Barranco to allow them to find a formal way in which they can continue operating.

“In a season of great importance for artisanal fishing, affected by El Niño, it is essential to guarantee the exercise of the work of artisanal fishermen. Even more so, if their boats, unlike other structures and buildings, do not affect the landscape or the free movement of people,” said Oceana Perú on social networks.
