Guilds meet with Produce to request the closure of the second fishing season

Imarpe will send a report to Produce in the coming days with recommendations on the continuity of the second anchovy capture season, according to the union members.

Two unions of fishermen and workers in the industrial fishing sector met this Wednesday, December 27, with authorities from the Ministry of Production (Produce) to request the closure of the second fishing season. since juvenile anchovy catches already exceeded 361,000 metric tons, according to official information from Imarpe as of December 21.

The leaders of the Single Union of Fishermen of New Vessels of Peru (Supnep) and the Single Union of Motorists, Officers and Fishermen of Peru (Sumopp) were dissatisfied with the meeting because, as reported, the minister did not attend. Ana María Choquehuanca nor was any relevant information provided or any decision made regarding the closure of the fishing season.

On behalf of Produce, the meeting was attended by the Vice Minister of Fisheries, Úrsula Desilú León, and the scientific director of Imarpe, Renato Guevara. Both listened to the leaders’ demands and provided reports with the data already known, when they were expected to provide more up-to-date information.

“The Supnep and Sumopp We will continue to demand that the Minister of Production sign the resolution to immediately close the second fishing season, after which we will ask the Executive for an immediate change in this office, as well as the vice minister of fisheries and the Imarpe officials, due to the poor management they have been giving in the sector,” they said in a statement.
