The Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe) authorized the execution of exploratory fishing for the anchovy resource (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (anchovy nasus) in the Southern Zone of the Peruvian Sea.
According to ministerial resolution 000429-2023-PRODUCE, it establishes the use of larger scale purse seine fishing vessels, starting on Thursday, December 21, for a period of 10 calendar days, in the maritime area from 16ยบ00′ S to the extreme south, from 5 nautical miles away from the coast.
The catches of the anchovy resource extracted by vessels participating in exploratory fishing are deducted from the Maximum Catch Limit per Vessel (LMCE Sur) of the following fishing season for the anchovy resource in the Southern Zone.
The day before, the Ministry of Production (Produce) established the Maximum Total Capture Limit for Direct Human Consumption (LMTC-CHD) of the anchovy resource for 2023 at 150,000 tons, corresponding to the entire coastline.
The objective is to “update information on the spatial distribution of the anchovy in the southern region of the Peruvian Sea, its size structure, the occurrence of other species; as well as the prevailing environmental conditions,” according to the resolution.
Imarpe coordinates and monitors the development of the aforementioned exploratory fishing and must promptly communicate to Produce about its development, recommending, as soon as necessary, the measures that are necessary.
If this is the case, Imarpe qualifies the suspension of activities, the immediate closure of fishing areas due to the incidence of juveniles or entanglement; as well as, the conclusion of the exploratory fishing, as appropriate.
