Who was Tilsa Tsuchiya?

Tilsa Tsuchiya Castillo, born on November 24, 1928, in Supe, Lima, was the daughter of Yoshigoro Tsuchiya, a Japanese doctor, and María Luisa Castillo, a Tusan Peruvian of Spanish-Chinese descent. Tilsa and her seven siblings were orphaned at an early age, facing the loss of her father during her studies at the National School of Fine Arts in Lima, in 1947, followed by the death of her mother, two years later. after.

Due to these tragedies, he temporarily withdrew from the school of Fine Arts and, together with his brother Wilfredo, opened a glass shop and framing workshop on Petit Thouars Avenue. During this period of emotional recovery, Tilsa had her first child, but she never lost her connection to painting. In his free time, he dedicated himself to making reproductions of Van Gogh paintings.

When he chose to return to the School of Fine Arts, he enrolled in the workshops of the artists Carlos Quizpez Asín and Ricardo Grau, and also received private classes from the painter Manuel Zapata Orihuela. During this period, Tilsa Tsuchiya began to stand out for her skill and originality, managing to obtain with honors the Great Gold Medal in Painting of the Class of 1959. Even before graduating, she won the Second Prize at the Municipal Hall of 1957 and participated in the First Youth Biennial in Paris in 1958, representing Peru.

In 1960, he moved to France to study Engraving at the École des Beaux-Arts and Art History at the Sorbonne. There, in 1963, she married Charles Mercier and she acquired French nationality. During her stay in Europe, her work gained recognition and was exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art in 1968. In 1970, she received the Tecnoquimica Prize, consolidating her successful artistic career.

In 1973, she made the decision to divorce, returned to Lima and settled permanently in Breña. In this period, her art began to incorporate elements of fantasy and narrative, fusing the imagery and mythology of indigenous Peruvians with European influences. He died in 1984, at the age of 55, a victim of cancer.

This new bill bears the image of Tilsa Tsuchiya’s face, in a purple color with combinations of green in the background. The reverse of the bill is designed in vertical format, and shows images of the Cock of the Rock and the Flor Bella Abanquina.
