What does the new S/1 coin look like and who is the character that appears on it?

In recent years, the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) has issued S/1 coins alluding to Peruvianity. You can find different designs that include flora, fauna, historical figures, monuments, among others. In addition to entering circulation, they are highly sought after by collectors due to their characteristics, design and relief.

As part of the issuance of coins belonging to the Constructores de la República Bicentenario 1821–2021 series, the BCR issued the ninth currency of this numismatic family and did so through Circular 0024-2023-BCRP, published in the Standards Bulletin Legal of official newspaper El Peruano. Who appears in the new S/1 currency?

Is about Jose Manuel Valdes, who is considered the most important Afro-Peruvian doctor of the emancipation and beginnings of the Republic. Given his racial condition, he was prevented from pursuing higher education. However, Hipólito Unanue made a special request to the Spanish Crown upon noticing his talent and ability. Thanks to this request, Valdés obtained the degrees of bachelor, graduate and doctor of Medicine.

In addition to achieving this feat for his time, Valdés was very important in the fight for independence, since with his knowledge he cured many wounded soldiers and even those who suffered from diseases such as malaria. Likewise, he created a balm to counteract childhood seizures.
