The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) issued today the new S/1 currency in tribute to José Manuel Valdés, the most important Afro-Peruvian doctor of the emancipation and beginnings of the Republic.
This is the ninth coin that will enter circulation in the Builders of the Bicentennial Republic 1821–2021 series.
The characteristics of the coin are:

Who was José Manuel Valdés?
Due to his racial condition, Valdés was discriminated against and was prohibited from university education; Even so, due to his intelligence and talent, the council and Hipólito Unanue asked the Spanish Crown for a dispensation so that he could opt for the degrees of bachelor, graduate and doctor of Medicine at the Royal University of San Marcos (1806).
Valdés was a member of the Peruvian protomedicate and of the Royal Medical Academy of Madrid (1816), government chamber doctor (1822), professor of medicine (1827-1835), substitute deputy for Lima (1829), general protomedic of the Republic (1835-1843) and director of the Independence College (1840-1843).
