Las Bambas: key day for consensus to be reached

After the mining company MMG Las Bambas improved its offer to Chumbivilcas (Cusco) with the aim of ending the blockade carried out since last November 20, eight of the ten communities decided not to accept them and in response to this they have presented a counterproposal as solution to social conflict.

The Republic had access to the document that the Coordinator of Peasant Communities of the Mining Corridor sent to the president of the Council of Ministers, Mirtha Vásquez, in order to have a peaceful coexistence.

In this way, they demand 25 encapsulated cars and 25 vans, which must be paid with the amounts paid by national and / or foreign companies. In addition, they request road maintenance services in the Cusco region, in the sections from Saywa, Ccapacmarca district, to the Urinsaya community, in Ccoporaque Espinar, and the section of the logistics corridor between Cungunya, Ccapacmarca to Ranraccasa Yaurisque Paruro.

To this is added an investment by the mining company to mitigate environmental impacts, which will amount to S / 1,200,000 for each community per year, in compliance with its socio-environmental responsibility.

Wilber Fuentes, president of the Front for the Defense of the Interests of the Province of Chumbivilcas, told La República that they hope that an agreement can be reached.

It is important to mention that the document also indicates that, if the mining company does not accept the proposal, “there will be no legal sanitation of the road and we will regain possession of our land.”

Against time

A few weeks ago, the mining company MMG Las Bambas warned that in the middle of this month it would paralyze its production if the blockade continued, since it would need inputs for the exploitation of the mineral.

In this regard, Prime Minister Mirtha Vásquez stated that she has spoken with the mining company and it has expressed that they wish to continue working in the area and hope that the conflict will be resolved.

According to Vásquez, a meeting with the communities is scheduled for today.

Meanwhile, the Union of Trade Unions of Peru asked the Government to prioritize dialogue to prevent Las Bambas from being paralyzed, which would impact the income of around 8,000 families.

For his part, the former Minister of Energy and Mines, Carlos Herrera, asked the Minem to have a greater presence in this social conflict because its function is to advance mining.

“I don’t perceive that Minem is leading the issue or looking for a solution. There is no clear actor and as there is not, this falls on the prime minister and the president, “he said. ❖

Counter proposal

Eight out of ten Chumbivilcas communities did not accept the MMG mining company’s proposal and presented a counterproposal to end the social conflict.

The word

Mirtha Vasquez, premier

“The company has every decision to continue operating in the area and we have every decision to help deconflict or at least de-escalate the conflict and manage these concerns of the population.”
