The National Agricultural Register (Renagro) is active again after almost ten months since it was suspended last February following the resignation of the then Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Bernardo Manzano. Now the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) has announced a mass collection of information in the field to find out the number of producers in the country with the aim of updating the register, a process that will begin in the province of Tungurahua starting in December. in 2023

Renagro already had a first phase, a pilot plan that was developed in the Galapagos Islands and included communication, socialization and information gathering between August and September 2022. While the processing and dissemination of information took place in November 2022.

The start of the work of the National Agricultural Register, which was planned for February 15 of this year, was suspended

The results obtained are that there are 1,117 productive people in the Galapagos, in 1,154 agricultural production units (UPA). The monitoring area is 24,528 ha. It was also possible to verify that the main crops in the area are bananas and coffee produced on the islands of Isabela, Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal.

Meanwhile, at the beginning of the process in continental Ecuador, in Tungurahu, a preliminary socialization process is planned with 44 parish governments, which will be strategic actors between surveyors and producers to guarantee the safety of citizens. According to figures from the Continuous Survey of Agricultural Areas and Production (Espac), as of 2022, 156,836 hectares correspond to the productive area of Tungurahu.

The Ministry indicated that the research aims to find out the socio-production characteristics of people who are dedicated to agriculture and animal husbandry in 24 provinces, along with the sector they produce, the number of hectares and the place where they do it.

The state portfolio clarified that Renagro has no tax or punitive purposes, on the contrary, it will enable the recognition of the needs of the rural sector in production contexts, the design of public policies and differentiated programs.

In the Galapagos, the National Agricultural Register was concluded, where 1117 producers were listed

Ivonne Aguilar, MAG district director in Tungurahua, reported that production processes in the province are changing and dynamizing for this reason. “It is necessary to have up-to-date information, since registered citizens of rural sectors will be able to access benefits granted by the state, training and credit opportunities,” said Aguilar.

The only requirement for the registration of farmers and herders is an identity card.

The 30 million dollars for the execution of Renagra comes from the AFD of France

Meanwhile, MAG did not provide new details on the financing of this process, however, until last February, a payment of 30 million dollars was planned by the AFD, a public body that contributes to the implementation of French policy in practice. in terms of development and international policy of solidarity, which signed a contract with the Ministry of Finance to cover the total value of the enforcement against Renagro, which has not been carried out for 22 years.

The funds, which would be delivered in three payments, should have a repayment term of 20 years, including a five-year grace period, with an approximate interest rate of 0.25% per annum.
