They warn of a high presence of juveniles in the second fishing season

Industrial fishermen warn of the high incidence of juveniles in the development of the second 2023 anchovy fishing season, which is why they request the Ministry of Production (Produce) the closure of this activity. They consider that the development and reproduction of the resource must be protected now so that there is fishing in the 2024 seasons, which will also be complicated due to the El Niño phenomenon.

“From the first day of exploration (until now) there has been a high incidence of juvenile fishing, in percentages of 60% to 65%; in some areas it has reached up to 75%,” said the general secretary of the Fishermen’s Union of Chimbote and Annexes, Lorenzo Vásquez Contreras, to La República.

According to Vásquez, who has been on board since the exploratory fishing began on October 21, The trend they are finding is 11.5 centimeters, when the minimum capture size is 12 centimeters. Furthermore, per day they are only managing to capture approximately 60 metric tons per vessel, which is very low, since the vessels have a capacity of 200 tons or more.

Another reason why they disagree with capturing juveniles is because in the wineries the resource dehydrates faster and loses weight. Furthermore, when it passes through the conveyor belts to go to the processing plants, the anchovy is cut into pieces, the remaining pieces are used for flour, but they are not accounted for in favor of the fishermen, which reduces their profits.

Season preview

In 36 days of operations, more than 906,000 tons of anchovy have been landed, which represents 54% of the total quota assigned (1.6 million) for the north-central stock, according to Angel Perea, director of Imarpe in Chimbote.

“An important detail in favor of fishing is that the South Pacific Anticyclone maintains its activity, producing cooling in the coastal strip where sea surface temperature anomalies have even dropped to values lower than 1 °C, preventing further warming in favor of fishing. resources such as anchovy and others, generating a window for fishing,” Perea explained.
