From time to time, the National Customs Superintendence (Sunat) places at auction various products that have been confiscated or forgotten in their warehouses. These auctions are shared on its official website and are enabled for all citizens.

What does Sunat do with all the money collected?

The answer to this question can be found on the Sunat website itself. The entity has dedicated a section of its page to answer the various questions that citizens may ask themselves in relation to online auctions.

To the surprises of many, the proceeds are not donated. The amount obtained from the auctions will be used to pay the expenses generated to carry out the auction, the procedural expenses and the tax debt thereof. If the taxpayer’s total debt is paid, there is still excess money left, this will be delivered to the tax debtor (owner of the assets to be auctioned).

Who cannot participate in Customs online auctions?

According to the Sunat regulations, the following people may not be bidders in the auction or bid through third parties:

  • The tax debtor, owner of the assets to be auctioned
  • Sunat workers, their spouses and family members up to the second degree of affinity and fourth degree of consanguinity
  • The experts, the public auctioneer and all those who had directly intervened in the appraisal and auction procedure
  • Those who in a previous auction have been declared winners of the property and have not paid the balance of the price within the corresponding period.
